For the more bohemian visitor there are numerous places to visit in Glasgow’s West End which features tea rooms, boutiques, cafés, bars, restaurants and clubs as well as some interesting Glasgow bed and breakfast accommodation. In the article below I will describe 3 visitor attractions in Glasgow which will be of interest to those visitors who enjoy all things associated with art; the Burrell Collection, the House For An Art Lover and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum:

The Burrell Collection

The Burrell Collection was given by Sir William and Lady Burrell to the city of Glasgow in 1944 and the collection can be seen at Pollok Country Park which is found in the south of Glasgow This beautiful collection of art works consists of more than 9 thousand items. The collection is very diverse containing some modern art sculptures and a superb collection of Islamic art. There are works of art by a variety of artists including Cezanne and Degas. Besides sculptures and paintings visitors can enjoy the spectacular collections of English furniture, stained glass, tapestries and alabasters. As well as all this, the Burrell Collection also has an incredibly important selection of art from the medieval period plus collections from ancient Egypt & China.

The House For An Art Lover

House For An Art Lover is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Glasgow. This incredible Art Nouveau house was originally designed by Glasgow’s most famous architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (with the help of his wife).

Actually the design was made for a competition of 1901 to draw up a design for a ‘House for an Art Lover’, however, the entry by Charles and his wife was disqualified because it was submitted after the closing date. Fortunately, more than one hundred years later the house stands in Bellahouston Park due to the efforts and hard work of the architect Professor Andy Macmillan and the engineer Graham Roxburgh. Building started in the year nineteen eighty nine, ceased for a short amount of time but restarted in nineteen ninety four due to the collaboration between the Glasgow City Council and Glasgow School of Art.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

One of Scotland’s finest museums and art galleries, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery is where one of the greatest civic art collections in Europe is housed, but also it is one of the most popular free to enter attractions to be found in Scotland.

You will discover Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on Argyle Street, on the banks of the River Kelvin, in the West End of Glasgow. The gallery was constructed in a Spanish Baroque style following the Glaswegian tradition of using red sandstone. The building was followed the designs of E.J. Milner Allen and Sir John W. Simpson and opened its doors to the public in the year nineteen hundred and one. The collections of the museum originally came from the McLellan Galleries and the old Kelvingrove House Museum.
