This year many thousands of us will be jetting off to far flung corners of the globe to lie on sun soaked tropical beach, to trek through some of world’s most beautiful wilderness countryside, to visit some of the architectural wonders of our planet or to simply explore new countries and cultures. And, unluckily, many thousands of us will discover that the first one or two days of our holiday will be lost trying to recover from jet lag.

However is jet lag an inevitable part of modern long-haul travel?

The answer to this particular depends very much on where you are flying to. If you start your journey in Darwin, Australia and fly to Osaka, Japan then you will not experience any jet lag at all because, even though you are flying some 7,000 miles, your journey essentially takes you north so that both your starting point and destination lie in the same time zone. If however you fly from Sydney to London, England then you will travel east to west across ten time zones and you will undoubtedly experience jet lag.

Jet lag is simply a consequence of your body clock being out of step with local time and, although your internal body clock will adjust itself to match the local time, any adjustment takes time.

If you travel over only two or three time zones then the time difference experienced will be small and you probably will not really notice it and your body clock will adjust reasonably fast. If however you fly over more than four time zones then the difference is going to be noticeable and your internal clock will take longer and longer to adjust as you travel across more and more time zones.

In our previous example of traveling from Australia to London your internal clock will take several days to adjust itself fully and, while it is doing so, you are likely to find yourself suffering from insomnia, finding it hard to get to sleep at night and to get up in the morning, feeling tired through the day, possibly experiencing difficulty in eating with stomach upsets, nausea, a feeling of dehydration, a headache, and much more.

So exactly what can you do to counter this?

There are many ‘traditional’ jet lag remedies including jet lag diets, sleeping pills, over-the-counter medicines, melatonin and others and each of these has its supporters and critics, but do these ‘traditional’ remedies work?

In simple terms the answer to this question is no. These ‘traditional’ jet lag remedies do not work and, in many cases, can actually make your jet lag worse.

Coping with jet lag is not a question of using formulas and pills, but requires you to devise a plan centered on your particular travel plans and lifestyle which assists your body’s natural adjustment of its own internal body clock. This means taking a series of steps in preparation for your journey, as well as during your flight and at your destination. In some cases these are going to be enough for you to avoid jet lag completely and, in others, they will unquestionably reduce the effects of jet lag significantly.
